You Can Go First, After Me

S. O. A. P.

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

S-cripture:

1 Chronicles 17:1
After David was settled in his palace, he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am living in a house of cedar, while the Ark of the covenant of the Lord is under a tent.

O-bservation:

Whenever I read this passage, I think of childhood when little kids said things like, “You Can Go First, After Me.” Because way before King David had ever dreamed about building a house for God, he built a house for himself FIRST. When you read the whole story, God himself was not really wanting a house. In fact, he told David he’d been living in a tent while he brought the people out of Israel and was good with that. Yet to me, the idea that we think of ourselves FIRST is always troubling.

A-pplication:

When you read the whole story, you will see that God told David that his son (Solomon) would build the temple and not him. But once again, I’m thinking about the idea that, after I’ve taken care of myself, I may or may not help take care of you. Now I get it to some degree, even the airlines tell us if there is an emergency and the oxygen masks drop out of the ceiling, we are supposed to take care of our own breathing FIRST before we try and get the breathing apparatus on our children. I guess what I picked up on this AM was that even this great king, the man after God’s heart, thought of his own needs before he thought of the one who had given him everything. I hope you and I never get caught up in the worlds system that says, “You Can Go First, After Me.”

P-rayer:

This AM, I’m bowing, literally bowing before you in humble honor. I’m asking you to give me a huge “forgiveness pass,” for all of the times I’ve put my own needs ahead of even thinking about you. But the honest truth is that without your blessing in my life, I would have never ever had the idea that it’s best to let the other guy go before me. Thank you for showing me the way! Amen
