Why Didn’t He?

S. O. A. P.

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

S-cripture:

Jeremiah 22:3
This is what the Lord says: Do what is just and right. Rescue from the hand of the oppressor the one who has been robbed. Do no wrong or violence to the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place.

O-bservation:

Jeremiah was sent by God to say the above to the king of Judah, who sat on David’s throne. He was speaking to Jehoiakim, the second son of King Josiah. After giving this directive, the Lord said in this same chapter, “If you do these commands, you will come through the gates of the palace, riding in chariots and on horses, accompanied by your officials and your people. But if you don’t obey these commands, I’m going to destroy this palace.”

A-pplication:

Of course, we know that Jehoiakim did not obey the Lord, and finally, Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, came in and ransacked Jerusalem and took the people of God into captivity. But with such a defined order, which was business as usual when King David led the people of God, the question is, “Why Didn’t He?” Seriously why didn’t King Jehoiakim just obey the command from the Lord? One of the reasons was that people were not the greatest equity in Jerusalem to this king. People were secondary to his personal agenda. The same is true today. People have become secondary to the whims of a political agenda that does not include them. How else can you explain mass murder in our streets and cities? Incoming foreigners hated. Injustice is tolerated, where our prisons are bursting with men and women who will never get out. Many of them are being held there on ridiculous so-called crimes. People’s goods are being robbed from them and taken by the government. Children are left to the cheapest bidder, and widows have been forgotten. These crimes today are the same that were happening in Jeremiah’s day. If we don’t learn from history, we are bound to repeat it.

P-rayer:

Dear Jesus,

My heart is broken for this nation of ours this AM. We have so much potential good in us and so much to offer the world, but it appears that we would rather argue politics than truly serve people. Help us, Lord. Save us, Lord! Amen
