Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!
S-cripture:
Genesis 44:30-31a
So now, if the boy is not with us when I go back to your servant my father, and if my father, whose life is closely bound up with the boy’s life, sees that the boy isn’t there, he will die.
O-bservation:
Jacob had twelve sons, but only two of the sons were by way of his beloved wife Rachel—Joseph and Benjamin. In Jacob’s mind, Joseph had been killed by a wild animal. A lie told by Joseph’s brothers, who had sold him into bondage. Now Joseph, known to his brothers as the chief finance director of Egypt, is telling them the only way they will ever see their little brother again is to leave him in prison for stealing Joseph’s silver cup. Joseph had placed the cup in the younger brother’s belongings without his knowledge. In this passage, Joseph’s older brother Judah is pleading for his little brother Benjamin’s innocence and his father’s life, which were both being held captive by Joseph.
A-pplication:
It doesn’t say it in this chapter, but the next chapter tells us Joseph couldn’t contain his deception or his disguise anymore, and he broke down before his brothers and let them know who he was. They all wept together, and Joseph explained to them in time that what the devil meant for bad God turned around for good. I believe Joseph desperately wanted to see his father, and he definitely wanted to reveal himself to his brothers. Perhaps he would have continued with the charade, but then he heard his big brother say, “If we go home without Benjamin, Pop will die.” That got Joseph’s attention, and he must have thought, “What Good Is Money If Dad Is Gone?” When we pray for God to bless our finances, it should always be with our church, our family, and our friends in mind.
P-rayer:
Dear Jesus,
This AM, as I pray for You to bless our church and our family’s finances, I’m reminded that it’s not about how much I give but rather how much I keep. Help me remember that prosperity is really about having all I need to do all that You’ve called me to do. Amen
