S-cripture:
Luke 23:56
Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.
O-bservation:
This is the story of what happened shortly after Jesus’ death. Once dead, a man by the name of Joseph asked the leadership if he could bury Jesus in a borrowed tomb. Permission was granted to Joseph. The women who were at the cross followed those who took the body of Christ to the burial site. They intended to go home and rest, then return to add spices to Jesus’ body.
A-pplication:
Even though Jesus had consistently taught His followers, for over three years, that His purpose was to sacrifice His life for the forgiveness of people’s sins and empower them to preach the good news until His return, His followers didn’t get it. It took His death, burial, and bodily resurrection from the grave to open their eyes. But when the scripture tells us that these women went home to rest, it was almost as if they were going home to experience “The Rest Before The Revival.” That’s right! When those women went to sleep and rested, the next time they visited Jesus’ tomb, He was gone. Sometimes REST provides a separation between the way things used to be and how God wants something new to take its place. Once Jesus had accomplished His mission on earth, a revival began, which continues today. So if you feel a change coming, why not REST.
P-rayer:
Dear Jesus,
In my local context, our people are finishing twenty-one days of prayer and fasting. After all the intensity of the Christmas holidays, we have taken a break to pray and fast. I believe we have experienced “The Rest Before Revival!” Please, Lord, do something NEW in each of us, I pray. Amen
