Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!
S-cripture:
Luke 14:27
And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
O-bservation:
The obvious immediate response to these words of Jesus would be, “If You’re Really Serious!” In other words, there will always be a cost to following Jesus as Lord and Savior. He didn’t die for nothing. He died and resurrected and gave us the Holy Spirit to be with us twenty-four-seven! Because of this, we must and can take up our cross (mission) and follow Him.
A-pplication:
I suppose in my years of Christian service, I’ve heard the debate over and over, “Can you be a Christian and not be a disciple?” I’m not going to answer that with a yes or a no, but with a question of my own. “Why would you want to?” Because the first question is begging to receive everything with no cost in return. However, let’s be real, everything costs! You either need gas or a battery charge to drive your car to work. And that will cost you. You pay either rent or mortgage and repair bills to put a roof over your head. You spend sleepless nights raising children. You may complain, but you don’t quit because you know that everything costs something! But now, my relationship with Jesus is to be debt free? Really? Are you serious? If I am going to receive eternal life because of the price He paid, I must take my cross with it. How can I be saved and not be a disciple? You must answer that “If You’re Really Serious!”
P-rayer:
Dear Jesus,
I’ve never asked the question, “Can I be a Christian and not a disciple?” because I’m really serious! I love You forever! Amen
