S-cripture:
Proverbs 18:24
One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
O-bservation:
Here the wisest man who ever lived, Solomon says that if we have friends who are unreliable, in time, you and I will eventually be horribly left in the middle of a mess. Conversely, Solomon said that there is, “The Friend Who Sticks Closer Than A Brother.” Maybe he was thinking about the close relationship his father David had had with his friend Jonathon which at that time in history was legendary. But most theologians and just, regular followers of Jesus like you and me believe that he was speaking of the future Messiah, even Jesus Christ the Lord. “The Friend Who Sticks Closer Than A Brother.”
A-pplication:
I never had a brother. But I have known brothers who weren’t very close to each other. Yet, when you speak of brotherly love, it usually has to do with that kind of love where I can say something unkind about my brother, but if anyone else does, I will fight to the end for my brother. Here the wiseman Solomon is speaking about an even greater love than this. He’s talking about “The Friend Who Sticks Closer Than A Brother!” When you really step back and look at this passage in the larger context, who else could Solomon have been speaking about than Jesus? How many times have you felt as though you were all alone and couldn’t even think of anyone in the world that you could call! I’m talking there was NO ONE? But then, you began to weep and look to Jesus and say, “Thank you Jesus that you are there. Thank you that I can always turn to you when there is no one else to talk to. Thank you Lord that you are, ‘The Friend That Sticks Closer Than A Brother.”
P-rayer:
Dear Jesus,
Today I rejoice in the fact that I am never alone! You are always there. When I feel like everyone else has forsaken me I stop and I remember that I have a friend who sticks closer than a brother. That would be you dear Jesus! All I can say is, THANK YOU! Amen
