S-cripture:

1 Peter 2:17
Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.

O-bservation:

Here St. Peter writing to God’s people everywhere, said that we, as “Jesus Followers,” are to always show proper R-E-S-P-E-C-T to everyone and, in particular, to three different categories of people and authority at all times. We are to love the family of believers, and that includes our own family. Second, we are to fear the God of the universe. And finally, we are to honor the person in political leadership. In other words, we are called to live a life of R-E-S-P-E-C-T at all times.

A-pplication:

We followers of Jesus were never called to be disrespectful at any time. We have been called to live a life of R-E-S-P-E-C-T at all times. Love your family of God at all times. Whatever they do or whatever you learn they have done, still love them. If they mess up, it will guarantee you a seat at their table to help them get back on track. Fear God Almighty. That’s a whole different kind of R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Yes, this has to do with a holy fear, but it also has a lot to do with plain old FEAR. There were things I did and did not do because I was afraid of my father when I was a boy. Yes, I respected him, but I was also afraid of him. I was little, he was big, and if I messed up, he helped me get back on the right path if you know what I mean. When you know God, yes, you love him, but you also FEAR who he is. Then Peter speaks of honoring the political leader of your personal world. You don’t honor what he believes or what she does, but you honor them because of the position they hold. Remember today that you and I are CALLED by God to R-E-S-P-E-C-T, EVERYONE!

P-rayer:

Dear Jesus,

I need you today to wash any spirit of judgment out of my spirit that threatens my ability to respect anyone and everyone. Let me love, honor, and respect people because they are yours, and you have made each and everyone of us. Amen
