S-cripture:
1 Samuel 27:12
Achish trusted David and said to himself, “He has become so obnoxious to his people, the Israelites, that he will be my servant for life.”
O-bservation:
Life had become so difficult for David while Saul was the king that he decided to go and live among the Philistines in a town called Ziklag under the rulership of Achish, the son of King Maok. David pledged his allegiance to Achish, and he was safe from Saul. Today David would be called an Israeli spy living among the enemy. He so endeared himself to Achish that Achish thought David would be his servant for life. But when you know the whole story, this indeed was “A Poor Assessment.”
A-pplication:
David never was an ally of Achish. He was an Israelite and a dreaded enemy of all Philistine people. But he was also very cunning and the most brilliant strategist Israel has ever had, even perhaps till this present day. Of course, as I write, I’m on the side of David. I laugh as I read this story in the Bible, mostly because my guy is winning. But, it does cause me to check my own discernment. Am I on guard against the enemy of my soul. Am I aware of the evil people that pose as friends that are only out to take me down? St. Peter wrote many years later, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8) If I’m not careful, I will make “A Poor Assessment,” of someone who has bad intentions toward me. The same is true of you. Pray for discernment today.
P-rayer:
Dear Jesus,
I need discernment today. I’m not saying I’ve never had it; I just need more. You are the one who knows my heart, and I want to please you and not be gullible to those who may have poor intentions towards me. Help me, Jesus. Amen
