Take Your Only Son And Sacrifice Him!

S. O. A. P.

Here’s Your 90 second AM Devotional!

S-cripture:

Genesis 22:2

Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.”

O-bservation:

Abraham was an old man when God asked him to “Take Your Only Son And Sacrifice Him.” Abraham had an older son named Ishmael by his wife Sarah’s handmaiden, Hagar. Ishmael was blessed, but God did not recognize Ishmael as the promised son God would give Abraham. The promised one was Isaac, and now God was asking Abraham to sacrifice him as a burnt offering back to God.

A-pplication:

Whenever I read this passage, it’s on the same day every year based on my reading schedule. And every year, it falls on January eighth. That happens to be my oldest son’s birthday. Today he turns forty-one! There was a time he was my only son, but now I have four. There is no way I can wrap my head around sacrificing any of my four sons on a burning altar! I know it was a different time in history, but the context is the same, no matter how primitive it may have been. A father willing to kill his son for God’s sake. It’s one thing to dedicate your child to the Lord on child dedication Sunday once a month, but this was “For Real!” Abraham passed the test, and God saved Abraham’s son. But think about God himself, in time being willing to answer His own call. He did sacrifice his ONLY SON, whom he LOVED, so you and I could go free.

P-rayer:

Dear Jesus,

As I’m wishing my oldest son a Happy Birthday today, I’m thinking of the price You, as a father, were willing to pay for your son Jesus to give His life for me. It’s unfathomable for me to try and understand that, but I can never thank You enough. Amen
