S-cripture:

Nehemiah 8:17
The whole company that had returned from exile built temporary shelters and lived in them. From the days of Joshua son of Nun until that day, the Israelites had not celebrated it like this. And their joy was very great.

O-bservation:

After Nehemiah had rebuilt the wall of Jerusalem, Ezra, the prophet of the Lord, came to Jerusalem and began to read the Book of the Law of Moses publicly. Because of their Babylonian captivity for seventy years, it had been many years since they had heard the Law of Moses read publicly. In fact, most of them had NEVER heard the Book of the Law read aloud. They were taught to celebrate the Atonement, and immediately following here in this passage, they built temporary shelters and lived in them for seven days. This is known as the Feast of Tabernacles. These poor people of the Lord had for so long rebelled against the Lord, in order to follow other gods that they lost the blessing of the Lord in their country. Now they had found it again.

A-pplication:

We, who call ourselves Followers of Jesus, had better be very careful to handle these blessings with care. If we don’t, and we begin for some reason to think that we deserve them and probably everyone is blessed like we are, just like Israel, we could lose them. The people of Israel had so learned their lesson that as Ezra, the man of God, read the Book of the Law of Moses publicly, the people wept in repentance. The leaders had to console them and then tell them not to weep because this was a time for rejoicing. Whenever I read this story, my prayer is always, “Oh Lord, may I ‘Never Lose The Blessing Of The Lord.”

P-rayer:

Dear Jesus,

There are no words to describe how very grateful I am for the blessings of the Lord in my life. May I never ever take them for granted but humbly serve you all the days of my life. Amen
